My Mother-in-law buys chickens like three to four times each week. She seldom reads the news nor watches television. I was reading Malaysiakini when i read this piece of news on “Thai chicken imports suspended over bird flu scare” and quickly ran to her room to inform her.
Malaysia has suspended imports of whole chicken and chicken parts from Thailand with immediate effect following a bird flu scare in the neighbouring country, state media reported.
She was glad i did as we’re out of chicken and she’ll be going to the market today to buy a more. I may not be the one doing the marketing, but as we live in the same household, i try my best to keep myself and everyone informed of all the latest happenings as to product recalls and such. Take the recent China Melamine-Tainted Milk Scare as an example. You should have seen her throwing everything that contains milk out of the kitchen.
Our local online daily, The Star also has an article on this:
Malaysia freezes permits for chicken imports from Thailand
PUTRAJAYA: The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry has frozen the issuance of permits for the import of whole chicken and chicken parts from Thailand with immediate effect.
Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said this was a precautionary measure following the spread of bird flu or the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the South-East Asia region.
“Malaysia imported 769 tonnes of chicken from the country (Thailand) between September and November this year,” he told reporters after closing the Third Country Training Programme on HPAI here yesterday.
Mustapa said the situation in Malaysia was under control, with no report on HPAI received by the Veterinary Service Department so far, and advised the public not to worry.
Though the situation is under control, i think we can afford to not eat chicken until we get the “ALL CLEAR” sign from the authorities. Both my kids, hubby and i dont eat much meat, but we do love chicken. What to do. We’ll stick to fish for the time being. I have a good Recipe Book on How To Cook Seafood. It’s at my sis’. Gotta go get it back from her later on
