Ipoh used to be a place where we can get lots of yummy hawker food at reasonable prices. But the days are long gone. Good hawker food are hard to come by as the older generation “expires”. Most of the famous stalls we used to eat at last time has been taken over either by their offsprings/relatives, or sold off to a high bidder.
The same goes for most of the stalls here at Kong Heng Coffeeshop. When i was younger and running the rat race, i used to lunch here once in a while with friends and my customers. I dont really like Ipoh Oldtown as the place is pretty jammed up during lunch hours. Finding a parking space within walking distance from the eateries is not easy. If possible, i try to avoid eating there at all cost unless i reach there by 12.30pm or after 2pm, lol.
One look at Kong Heng Coffeeshop and you can imagine how old this building is. The only thing i like about old buildings is their high ceiling. As you know, it can get pretty stuffy in the hot afternoons with so many hot stoves inside. These pics were taken sometime last week. I only ever eat at Ipoh Oldtown when i go do my banking at HSBC. Other than that, gimme a break. You can view its location here at Google Maps.
Hubby likes the Popiah there and so, i ordered two for him so that i can munch on a piece or two. Like i said earlier, this stall is now run by a new owner. I never order Popiah from the ex-owner. I find her rude as she had this habit of pointing at people whenever she ask them whether they want to eat her Popiah or not. BLEKKK. And so, i ignored her 100% of the time unless hubby orders it.
The Popiah here still tastes good, if not better. I can taste and feel the bite of crunchy fried prawn bits in there, and it blends well with the turnips, beansprouts and tofu. I would recommend you give it a try when you eat there.
This is the Kai Si Hor Fun that i ordered. I left the contents untouched as i wanted you to see how it looks like. (itching to edit the two hor fun away….) There’s really not much chicken in the bowl. But we still get two tiny prawns and some Kuchai, lol. As for the taste, it was rather bland. I believe it’s due to my eating there after 2pm. The soup must have been topped up with more water liao.
Abuthen, it’s not bad. The Hor Fun is still very smooth. Can try lah, ok. Just dont compare this to the Kai Si Hor Fun next door at Thean Chun, ok. It’s very different. The soup at Thean Chun is somewhat “sweeter”. I’ll go eat there next week, ok.
