I love these colorful Nyonya Kuihs, do you? The one in the middle, called the Gau Chang Kou (9 layers high – literally) is my favorite. But then, on closer inspection, i only counted a total of 8 layers in this particular batch that hubby bought for Malcolm, lol. Where did the other layer go to?
I guess people are getting lazier by the day. When i was a little girl, my mom will buy me this once in a while. If my memory serves me right, each layer has a different color and of equal height. The other Nyonya Kuihs in the container are Kuih Talam (the one with a white top and obscured green bottom), a superb combination of Salty (white) and Sweet (green) delicacy in one single bite.
The one at the left contains red beans (Malcolm’s favorite at the moment), and the yellow-colored one on the right contains sweet corns (Hubby’s choice). These Nyonya Kuihs are made from the same basic ingredients. I do have a recipe for Nyonya Kuih stashed somewhere inside my recipe box. I’ll go dig for it when i have the time. I’ve never made Nyonya Kuihs before.I may give it a try one day…..
