Nasi Kandar At Restoran Yong Suan

Each time hubby suggests we go for Indian Food or Nasi Kandar, i will joke with him and say he should have married an Indian Lady, and not me. He just love to eat Indian Food. This blog is proof of how many times i have blogged about our Indian Food chowtime whereabouts, lol.

Nasi Kandar At Restoran Yong Suan

Hubby actually meant to go for another round of Indian Food at Ipoh Oldtown. As yesterday was a public holiday, the whole of Ipoh Oldtown was jam-packed with motorists doing their banking. Cars were either double or triple parked right outside the banks. After going round the place around five times, hubby gave up and drove back into town.

Nasi Kandar At Restoran Yong Suan

He drove past Hume Street (where all the funeral parlors are located in Ipoh), and found a parking space on his left just as we were about to reach the Jalan Yang Kalsom T-junction. With a big grin on his face, he parked right there. This is another one of his favorite Nasi Kandar joints. Run by his old schoolmate. We seldom eat there as it’s also difficult to get a parking space along Jalan Yang Kalsom. Today must be his lucky day then. Rumors had it that this Nasi Kandar used to cook their rice with Ganja to make their customers come back for more. So much so that it’s nicknamed Nasi Ganja. It’s a rumor ok. I dont know how far true it is, ok. Dont come and flak me about it.

Mutton Kurma

I left it to him to order the food. He got me this Mutton Kurma. It may look bony and do not have much to bite. But he was in for a surprise when i managed to cut out lots of meaty bits for him to try. He’s not too fond of meat. The curry is so good that i ate it all with my rice.

Ayam Goreng

This Nasi Kandar stall is famous for its Ayam Goreng. You should see the workers carrying them non-stop from the kitchen. One is never enough. Hubby ordered two. Or else, we’ll be fighting over the last bite, lol.

Nasi Kandar

And this is the plate of rice. Comes with cucumber slices, one miserable piece of Lady’s Finger, curry and the sambal to the left. Dunno what it’s called but i like it when eaten with each spoonful of my rice. There’s also a hard-boiled egg which you cant see in my post. In all, plus two glasses of Teh-O-Ais-Limau (Rm3), the bill came up to Rm18.10. Expensive, hoh. But nevermind lah, i’m not the one footing the bill :)

To summarise this Nasi Kandar stall, the food quality has dropped a bit. The portions like the rice is much smaller compared to just a few years back. They no longer serve the vegetables and curries in separate plates before you. Instead, as you can see in the final picture, everything is piled onto the plate. Not a very pretty sight if you were to ask me. Cant blame them also. I believe this is also partly due to the rising cost of food prices.

Nevertheless, we’ll still go have lunch there another day should we ever find a parking space next time. In all my honest opinion, i’ll rate this Nasi Kandar a 7 out of 10. To my movie addicts, The Stew Of Life is currently airing. Drop me a comment with your email for updates.

Supper Of Maggi Mee Goreng At The Mamak Shop

It’s 2.30am and i’m actually eating Maggi Mee Goreng for supper. Malcolm refused to sleep, watudu. I’m so going to blame hubby if i ever become fat one day. It’ll most likely be 4am before i can sleep after what i’m having now. What’s there to do but play Professor Layton And The Diabolical Box in bed. Hope the puzzles will tire my already weary mind out faster, lol.

Drinking Mango Lassi At Old Andersonian’s Club

I’m enjoying my Mango Lassi whilst hubby is having his Banana Leaf Rice at Old Andersonian’s Club now. We’ll be here till it’s time to go pick the kids up from school. I bought a piece of marinated lamb shoulder from Jusco Supermarket just now. I’m still thinking whether to grill it or fry it later. Will blog about that tonight, ya. Hope you movie addicts enjoyed watching the daily episode updates :)

Ever Tried Tai Kau Meen Before?

I’ve always wanted to buy Tai Kau Meen from this stall for a long time. After digging my old post, i found out that i blogged about this Tai Kau Meen stall slightly more than a year ago, lol. This Tai Kau Meen stall is located right outside Nam Heong Coffeeshop along Jalan Bandar Timah at Ipoh Oldtown. Nam Heong Coffeeshop is the coffeshop right opposite Sin Yoon Loong (where you get Ipoh’s Best White Coffee).

Tai Kau Meen - Chinese Pancake

We seldom dine around this area as looking for a parking space can be hellish unless we go there after 2pm. We were passing by when suddenly, i just wanted to buy Tai Kau Meen. So, i asked hubby to drive a big round back to the stall.

Tai Kau Meen - Chinese Pancake

The Tai Kau Meen here is sold at 60 cents each. It’s not the thin-crust type, but rather, has some bite to it. And here’s the seller pouring some batter onto the hot plate. What’s there to do when one is waiting for food, right. Take out my Nokia N82 and snap away lorr. He didnt mind though.

A close up of the batter cooking on the hot-plate…

He’ll then spoon a dollop of margarine onto the somewhat cooked pancake. After that, he’ll add some creamy corn onto it.

Tai Kau Meen - Chinese Pancake

Here, the seller is seen lifting the cooked batter from the hot-plate in swift movements.

Tai Kau Meen - Chinese Pancake

See… the corn getting heated up on top of the Tai Kau Meen. I cannot remember when he sprinkled the coarse sugar onto it. It could be before he added the margarine or after the creamy corn or or or dunno lah, lol. Maybe after the grounded peanuts thimm, lol. Hubby honked and i walked back to the car mah….

Tai Kau Meen - Chinese Pancake

Anyway, here’s how the inside of the Tai Kau Meen is like. It’s supposed to be eaten folded in half. I ate it in the car. It’s best eaten right at the coffeeshop with your favorite beverage like Oldtown White Coffee of course, haha. Reason is, the Tai Kau Meen will soften really fast and lose its crunch once it’s placed into the plastic bag. Boh ooomph lorr, haimai. So, better dont tapau (takeaway), hoh.

Dying for a bite yet? Go buy some from him, okay. And to my movie addicts, hope you all enjoy the daily updates, ya. Dont forget to add me to Twitter, ya.

Restaurant 1919 – Ipoh Garden East

If i were to ask Gordon where would he like to eat at, he will surely tell me he wants to go to 1919. By that he means the corner restaurant across the street from Tesco at Ipoh Garden East.

Restaurant 1919 sideview

Restaurant 1919 has been around for a long time. We love to take our kids there for meals as the place is very cosy. Of course, the food there is great too. It’s a Halal Restaurant in case i have a Muslim reader here.

Restaurant 1919 interior

When i say cosy, i mean the place is really cosy. It’s filled with lots of knick-knacks and antiques. So, if you have young curious children like mine. TIE THEM UP, LOL!!!!

Restaurant 1919 Interior

Every corner of the restaurant is filled with “stuffs”, see what i mean.

Restaurant 1919 Washroom

My little “Toilet Inspector” will check out every toilet everywhere we go; be it a restaurant, coffeeshop, friend’s house or mall. He keep insisting that i “close the window” after he washed his hands. I have to shoo him out with the “cane-cane” i bring along with me everywhere. Dont ask why, DOHHHHH.

Here are just some of the food we’ve eaten there before. Dont be alarmed. These pics were taken over a long period of time. Definitely not what we ate in a single trip to 1919.

Steamed tofu

I thought this would be just any other ordinary Steamed Tofu. I love to order tofu as i love its texture and good for health. My kids also think they are eating “egg” and wont complain much. So, i tell them it’s a special “egg”.

Tofu Dish

See what’s inside when it’s opened. It’s filled with chopped up vegetables, mushrooms and prawns. It’s a large serving. We nearly didnt finish this. Unless we’re going there with two more adults, i dont think we’ll order this again as we’d like to try out other dishes as well.

Mixed Vegetables with Nuts

Hubby loves vegetables and so, we had this plate of mixed vegetables with cashew nuts. And yup, we both like it, but not the kids. Malcolm only wants the carrots. Gordon….. “dowan….”. Errrr no, he whacked all the cashew nuts if i’m not wrong.

Honey Chicken

The waitress recommended we try this Honey Chicken. She says it s firm favorite with kids and she’s so right. It’s boneless, and tastes sweet. Gordon ate most of it, and requested for more. Order this if you are dining with kids.

Bowl of Seaweed Soup

Malcolm loves soup very much. We ordered him this Seaweed Soup and he drank every drop of it. As for the vegetables, as usual, he only wants the carrots. Hubby and i ate most of what’s left of the soup. It’s a tad too salty for our liking. We wont be ordering it next time unless amnesia sets it.

Spinach Soup With Century Eggs

In place of the Seaweed Soup, we now order Seong Tong Yin Choy. Yin Choy is Chinese Spinach. It has a good soup base with some century eggs and bits of grilled cuttlefish to make it very aromatic. The kind that makes you want to slurp it when it’s placed before you. The Yin Choy served is also very tender, just that way i like it.

Seong Tong Yin Choy

Nah…. see…… haimai very good leh. Order this two-in-one dish on your next trip k.

Mantis Prawns with Mushroom Sauce

This is the best Mantis Prawns i’ve had. The batter covering it is not too thick; just enough to give it that crunchy feel. The addition of the Milky Mushroom Sauce compliments it so well that i have to recommend you try this when you eat there. We cant help it but order it each time. It gets the “Thumbs Up” from my family of four.

Steamed Egg Custard

“Sam Wong Tan” is steamed egg custard with three different types of egg; chicken eggs, duck eggs and century eggs all in one dish. The kids like eggs so we order this once in a while for them. Nothing to shout about.

Pandan Chicken

Ahhhh… this is Pandan Chicken. Actually, i like the pic more than the real thing, lol. My guess is, the bite-sized chicken pieces are first fried, then wrapped with pandan leaves for another round of deep frying. Goes well when dipped with the accompanying sauce.

Pandan Chicken

Here’s just a macro shot of the Pandan Chicken. So-so jek. But worth a try also lah.

Grilled Honey Chicken

This is Grilled Honey Chicken. It’s like Char-Siu to me. Texture wise, it’s moist and tender. Taste wise, it’s sweet lah. Kids will like this but honestly, i prefer the Honey Chicken i wrote earlier in this post.

Spinach Tofu

The tofu freak in us must have tofu once in a while. This is a delicious tofu dish in which the tofu is green in color. I suppose it got its color from spinach. It’s topped with chopped vegetables, minced chicken and also prawns. We like this very much. PASS.

Restaurant 1919 actually has a lot more yummy food that i’ve yet to try. You see, when you’re out dining with young children, we tend to order food that they wont object to until they get tired of eating it. It’s going to take many more trips there in order to try out the ones that i’ve marked down on my must-order-this-next-time list, lol.

This ends my Food P0rn session for the day. Writing this post made me so hungry. If Restaurant 1919 is near where i live, i would have gone there for a meal right now. Alas, it’s like 15Km away. Maybe this weekend. If you have good company and looking for a place with good food, i would recommend you head over to Restaurant 1919 and try out some of the dishes we’ve had there. To all my movie addicts, glad you all enjoyed watching all the daily episodes online ;)
