Wui Fan (Braised Rice) With Chicken

The shop where i ate this dish called Wui Fan has gone bankrupt. Wui Fan or simply, Braised Rice, is just a simple plate of white rice covered with egg gravy cooked with some vegetables and meat. The meat can be anything from chicken, pork slices to even fish fillet. I dont understand why they call Wui Fan Braised Rice in English. The rice is certainly not braised though. Only the gravy is.

Wui fan with chicken

I will order Wui Fan if my kids are out with me. They love egg with just about any dish. And since rice is still their favorite staple food, i make sure i order something that has egg in it for them. Be it steamed egg custard or fried omelets. And yes, i do make this Wui Fan once in a blue moon for them at home. But i just cant seem to get the egg consistency right half the time :p. Haih, i’ll blog about it when i make Wui Fan for them next time, k.

The art to making the perfect Wui Fan is to make sure the egg gravy doesnt turn out lumpy. It’s supposed to be smooth with a glossy finish. Some prefer the egg to be well distributed. Others like it semi raw. Whatever it is, just make sure you inform the cook how you want your Wui Fan to be. But if you are ordering Wui Fan for your kids, then make sure that the egg is 100% cooked. I love my Wui Fan with either sambal or just cilipadi with soy sauce. What about you?

Oldtown Kopitiam Sticky Rice

I’ve been to Oldtown Kopitiam a zillion times and yet, didnt know there’s such an item called Sticky Rice on the menu. Since i’m bored with most of the food at Oldtown Kopitiam, i ordered this for Gordon the other day. It’s a bit hard on the inside as i suspect these are frozen goods. But with all the spring onions, chillies, egg strips and crunchy fried dried prawn bits, this Oldtown Kopitiam Sticky Rice tastes delicious. A bit pricey though at Rm3.80 each. Definitely wont fill your stomach. If you want my opinion on this, i’ll rate it a 7 out of 10. Go try this Sticky Rice next time you go to Oldtown Kopitiam, k.

Ice-cream at Black Canyon Coffee

I gotta admit i do spoil my kids a little at times. They grow up so fast. If i dont pamper them now, soon, they’ll be off to college. The weather’s a bitch these days. The heat is stifling, and when it rains, there’s bound to be a thunderstorm. Today is another hot day. After picking up Gordon from school, hubby suggested we take him to Jusco for tea.

Gordon at Black Canyon Coffee

Gordon plonked himself in one of the chairs outside Black Canyon Coffee and smiled sheepishly at us. Oh, what the heck. Might as well eat there. Hubby ordered his favorite Thai Green Curry and two plain rice for the both of us. Since i’m not too hungry, i’ll share mine with Gordon if he doesnt mind the curry.

Thai Green Curry at Black Canyon Coffee

Hubby’s Thai Green Curry arrived fast as there were not that many people at that hour. He’s famished but had to wait till i finish camwhoring with the food, lol. The serving is enough for two. We didnt order drinks as we get plain water for free here. Why bother, huh.

Black Canyon Coffee Thai Green Curry

I even got him to scoop some Thai Green Curry up for me to snap. So bad of me, huh. Make him wait like that. The Thai Green Curry at Black Canyon Coffee contains chicken, some brinjals, green pepper, basil leaves and chillies. I’d love to learn how to make Thai Green Curry. Gotta look for a Thai Green Curry recipe pronto. How difficult can it be, right.

Thai Green Curry on plain white rice

What to do? That’s what he has to do as he married a blogger. Uh…. nope. I wasnt a blogger when he married me, lol. It’s after i had Gordon that i became one. Gordon took one bite of the rice with a teeny bit of Thai Green Curry in it and started hissing, wakakaka. He took gulps of water. I asked him if he still wanted any or not and he didnt refuse. I think he ate more than ten spoonfuls of my rice with Thai Green Curry.

Here’s another closer look of the Black Canyon Coffee ice-cream with fruits i ordered for Gordon. What a great way to cool down during a hot evening. Isnt my kid a lucky one :)

My simple lunch

I seldom eat lunch at home unless my mother-in-law cooks. I only prepare breakfast for my kids, and then have lunch elsewhere after sending them to school. Even though the recent price hike on fuel, electricity and rice affected the livelihood of many people, hawkers in Ipoh did not raise their prices high. maybe it’s due to the lower cost of living here, compared to big cities like KL or Penang.

This plate of rice with pork chop, sweet and sour chicken and vegetables only costs Rm3.20. It’s still fairly affordable for many people and the serving is decent enough to keep one full till tea time. I had this at a coffeeshop and not a restaurant. I did not order any drinks to go with my lunch as i usually have a tumbler of water in the car with me. Not that i fancy any of those water-down juices and beverages sold anyway.

Now that the economy is not that good, i try to save whenever possible. Coffeeshop owners have raised the prices of their beverages many times over the years. To me, i can eat without drinking anything at coffeeshops, lol. Not to say i’m cheap, but i really dont like their drinks. I do save a lot this way in a year. Of cos, i do order something every now and then. But if i can help it, i’d rather stick to my tumbler of water.

Chinese fried rice with eggs and ginger

One of my favorite comfort food is Chinese fried rice with eggs and ginger. Well, you only need the three main ingredients i mentioned. As for the taste, i only used soy sauce, and some pepper. I prefer to cook this dish with sesame oil. Definitely tastes much better than using olive oil. We do have quite a lot of leftover rice each day. Great for cooking this Chinese fried rice recipe.

Chinese fried rice with eggs and ginger

It’s a fact that price of rice will keep escalating due to speculated shortage. So, are you worried that one day, you go to the store and you cant buy rice? To tell you the truth, i seldom buy rice as my MIL takes care of that. I dont even know how much it costs.

But no matter what the price may be, as Asian, rice is our staple food. Whether it’s expensive or not, we have no choice but to keep buying. So, dont waste, ya. If you have leftover rice, give this Chinese fried rice with eggs and ginger recipe a try.
