How To Make Rice Burger

I told my 8.5yo that i will make a rice burger for him for lunch yesterday. He then loudly exclaimed that, “rice burger is bad food!!”. This is due to us constantly reminding the kids that hamburgers from McD and such arent the healthiest of choice when it comes to food. So, it’s kinda like drilled into them since young.

After googling for a nice pic of a rice burger to show him what i’ll be making for him, he then pushed me off the chair and asked me to go to the kitchen to make one for him whilst saying, “rice burger is good food”. LOL.

And so, here’s my version which i made for him today.

First, prepare a bowl of rice. This was last night’s leftover. We cook with mixed grains, hence the reddish-brownish tone of the rice.

Roll the rice into a big riceball, and flatten it with your palm. Wet your palms by dipping your fingers into a bowl of water every now and then. This will lessen the chances of the rice sticking to your palm as you press down to flatten the ball into patties. Bits of rice will tend to fall off the side of the pattie during the shaping process. So, push them in with your thumb as you turn the pattie around on your palm.

And here you have two nice flattened rice patties ready for frying.

I used my one-egg-frying-pan to fry the rice patties.

here they are, nicely browned on each side. Set aside to cool.

Sorry, i forgot to take pic of the meat patties. But since my kids dun fancy eating the lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber or wateva garnishings one normally places between the meat patties and the rice, i have them chopped and mixed into the meat patties :p

And here’s how my rice burger looked like. All that’s needed is ketchup/chilli sauce on one side, and mayonnaise on the other to make a great tasting rice burger for lunch that my kids will never say no to. A good idea to get kids that dont fancy rice to eat rice, yeah!!!! Hope you all enjoyed my rice burger pics and have a great weekend :)

Mini Rice Mould

Rice Mould

Finally, finally, finally!!! Bought a mini rice mould to prepare bentos for my kids. I used to make them with my cookie cutters, and they arent exactly the best tool for moulding rice as the soft grains keep getting stuck in between the grooves of the face plate. So, i end up with a slightly “disfigured” moulded rice whenever i use those. The only bonus to that is i do get Doraemon rice though, which makes the kids laugh as they eat, lol.

Rice Mould with rice

As you can see, using a rice mould is very easy. The bottom of the main rice mould body has removable shape plates with a bumpy surface (so that the rice wont stick to it) each to push the rice out when done. The cover to push the rice down also has the same kinda surface as you can see in the pic. Am happy that this mini rice mould can make such cute bite-sized rice, which is what i wanted. Add two black sesame seeds for eyes, and a tiny strip of seaweed for the mouth, i’ll get a happy face for the animal shaped ones. There are of course bigger rice moulds, but i prefer them smaller. I might buy the bigger ones next time.

Ahhh…. rice has never tasted better, lol. Great for those kids-dowan-rice-but-i-only-have-rice days!!

Ipoh Pak Kong Chicken Rice

Ever went to Pak Kong for its famous chicken rice? It’s at Theater Street. Went there for lunch with my friend one afternoon after dropping my kid off at school. I still remember the time when i was pregnant with Gordon. Hubby took me there when i had a sudden craving for it. Sigh….. those were the days. If you’ve not been to Pak Kong for chicken rice before, you ought to give it a try.

Yam Rice

I dont know what to say about this pic. It’s yam rice, made by my sis. From memory, it has yam, dried squids and pork along with rice and flavoring. My MIL seems to enjoy it though. Will ask her for the yam rice recipe when i go over to her place next week.

Four-sided Beans and Bacon Fried Rice

Four-sided beans are also known as winged beans. Oh, there are many other names for this small weird-looking beans but that’s not important. You just need to know that it’s four-sided, and flares from the center into ruffled wings at the ridges. It’s crunchy and tastes “greenish”. The whole bean can be eaten. It’s best fried with sambal. My sis cooked up a whole wok of fried rice with this four-sided beans and some bacon. I had a huge plate of this together with a spoonful of that hot and spicy homemade sambal my mom concocted. MmMMmm MmmmMM Mmmm MmmM mmMMMmmmM….
